Is Boyhood fiction or non-fiction?

Boyhood is a film directed by Richard Linklater that was filmed over a twelve year period following the childhood of Ellar Coltrane from 6 to 18. At first I thought it was going to be a non-fiction documentary film, but after watching the trailer it looks more like any ordinary fictional drama. Do you know which it is?

I also thought at first it was true but only because it took 12 years to make and followed the life of someone.
However, it does not say anywhere that it is actually a true story, so I would take it that it is NOT true and is indeed fiction perhaps based on some truth?

yes, Bryony, they always say even if it just based on a true story so who knows -that is my opinion but of course I could well be wrong!
