I was thinking over my favourite films today, and was suddenly struck by how many of them have set-piece battle scenes, some climactic, some opening the film.
A still from the start of the battle scene in Gladiator
No one genre comes out top in battle scenes. You might think that the modern classic war films, like Saving Private Ryan, couldn't be beaten for sheer shock and awe. However, there are plenty of historical films, like Gladiator, or 300, that have epic battles. And fantasy films, like Lord of the Rings, have scope to go where films based on real wars can't (dragons, cave trolls, huge war machines, and more.)
So, with such a huge variety to pick from, which is your favourite?
That's a very tough choice. I think it would be between Lord of The Rings: Return of the King, during the big battle sequence near the end, the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter, when Molly Weasley fights Bellatrix, the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when Harry fights Voldemort in the graveyard.
